Moshi

Moshi is a town in the northern part of Tanzania, situated on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Moshi is the administration headquarter of the Kilimanjaro region. The population of Moshi is less than 200,000 according to the 2002 population census of Tanzania. Because of the little population the town is not congested in vehicle traffic as compared to other provision headquarters in Tanzania. This make Moshi a ideal place for events such as east Africa cup.

Moshi Technical School (MTS)

Moshi Technical secondary school is the center of East Africa cup activities. During the EAC, all the participants stay here and play the games in nearby areas. The school was established in the year 1957 and is located about 3 kilometers from Moshi town. MTS is among the schools in Moshi and in Tanzania that teaches normal secondary school curriculum including technical subjects such, carpentry, welding, drawing among others. The school also has a provision of admitting disabled student who are taught in the same subject as regular students.

Moshi technical accommodates 350 girls and 950 boys; it has 40 boys' dormitories that accommodate at least 30 boys in each dormitory and 80 girls that can accommodate 4 girls in each room. The school sits in a compound of about 40 acre piece of land with two football fields, one volleyball field, one tennis court, one basketball field and over 20 class rooms with tree all over the place making it a very conducive environment for children to learn.

Cooperation

East Africa cup started its cooperation with Moshi Technical secondary school in 2006 after having a brief cooperation with Vocational Education Training Authority (VETA), VETA had a capacity of accommodating 350 participants which was full to capacity and overflow of participants had to be accommodation in other different schools, having accommodation at VETA made the arrangement of logistic before and during the tournament hard therefore East Africa cup had to look for a bigger facility within Moshi and it is through this that Moshi Technical school came in handy.

Since the cooperation with Moshi Technical school started, the school has been the centre of all activities during East Africa cup, 1200 participants are accommodated within the school compound, morning seminars are held in the school and most of the matches are played within the school compound, other important things that take place in the school include evening entertainment, participants meals are prepared in the school kitchen, the tournament secretariat is also stationed in the school.

The East Africa cup has also been involved in infrastructure development of the school, this has been through providing electricity in the dormitories, classes and security lights around the school, unblocking of drainage systems, painting of the assembly hall both inside and outside and rehabilitation of the football and volleyball facilities.

Cooperating school

Other than Moshi technical school, East Africa cup cooperates with different institutions who provide sports facilities free of charge for the tournament this include schools and government facilities.

Schools such as Mawenzi has been in cooperation with East Africa cup since 2009, the school has two football fields which have been rehabilitated by East Africa cup through installation of new goal posts, through this the students in the school are now able to use a standard football field throughout the year. Old Moshi also has two football fields which are always used and rehabilitated each year before and after the tournament

Other institutions that cooperats with EAC are the local prison department and the Police academy, who provide their sports facility to use during EAC. The Moshi municipal council provides it football facility to be used during EAC, this venue is where the finals of the tournament are held and in previous year EAC did rehabilitate the podium of the community field by painting it both inside and outside.

Local Community

The East Africa cup attracts over 1,500 people including the participants in Moshi for nearly two weeks. This creates a big impact in the local economy of Moshi municipality, apart from using Moshi Technical school as the center of activities, other groups such as Media, referees, first aid, organizers etc are accommodated in local hotels.

Seminars such as referees seminars held prior to the tournament are held at Young Men Christian association hostels where they stay from the beginning to the end of the tournament this facility accommodate around 60 leader including field managers.

Umoja hostel is the center where organizers are stations this venue accommodated around 60 leader including the organizing and executive committees, invited guests, and international volunteers, the venues also host media training workshop such as BBC your game seminar, filming seminar and cartoon seminar. Other hotels and hostels that host groups involved in the tournament include, Moshi View hosting Journalists, filming and your game seminar leaders, Golden View, accommodating first aiders, Big Mountain accommodating facilitators.

To commute within Moshi on different fields, East Africa cup involves more that 25 buses and mini buses to shuttle people around in different pre arranged routes where activities are taking place
